Green Finance Institute and PCAF collaborate to highlight the crucial role of the financial sector in the transition to net zero

Together, the organisations are hosting a series of webinars to discuss the importance of financed embodied carbon measurement and disclosure in the building sector. The first of these will be hosted by Madeline Schneider, Director of Operations at PCAF and Eduardo Brunet, Director of GFI Spain on 12 December.

Madrid December 11, 2023. Green Finance Institute (GFI) and the Partnership for Carbon Accounting Financials (PCAF) are collaborating on a series of webinars to promote and raise awareness of the key position of financial institutions in the transition to a net zero future. In this regard, both organisations highlight the need to collaborate, encourage and support strategic projects of common interest and important impact to achieve net zero at the European level.

The first of these three webinars will take place on 12 December at 10:00 am CET, with the participation of Madeline Schneider, Director of Operations of PCAF and Eduardo Brunet, Director of Green Finance Institute Spain. The webinar will include a presentation of the new embodied carbon guidance by Mustafa Abunofal of PCAF. This will be followed by a Q&A session with Eduardo Brunet and Nagadarsan Suresh, Project Manager of PCAF's project, ‘Financing towards net-zero buildings’.

As Eduardo Brunet Álvarez de Sotomayor, Director of Green Finance Institute Spain points out, "mobilising private capital in the transition to net zero will require the entire financial ecosystem - from policy makers to regulators - to seize the opportunity to transform the economy in line with the latest science and move towards a distributed, digitised and democratised energy system capable of meeting the challenges of the transition and capitalising on the new opportunities that are opening up".

Meanwhile, Madeline Schneider, PCAF’s Director of Operations notes: "Although reporting of financed embodied emissions is only in its early stages, measuring these emissions is critical to achieving the goal of zero net emissions. As part of our goal to mobilise the financial sector towards net zero buildings, PCAF has developed a guide for financial institutions to help them make initial estimates of their financed embodied emissions."

About PCAF (Partnership for Carbon Accounting Financials)

The Partnership for Carbon Accounting Financials (PCAF) was launched globally in September 2019. Currently, more than 450 financial institutions have subscribed to the PCAF initiative. PCAF participants work together to jointly develop the Global GHG Accounting and Reporting Standard for the Financial Industry to measure and disclose the greenhouse gas emissions of their loans and investments. By doing so, PCAF participants take an important step to assess climate-related risks, set targets in line with the Paris Climate Agreement and develop effective strategies to decarbonize our society.
